Solids Handling/Dewatering

Sludge accumulates in a wastewater treatment process must be treated and disposed of or re- used in a safe and effective manner. Following digestion which reduces the amount of organic matter and the number of disease-causing microorganisms (pathogen reduction) present in the solids "sludge" is generally dewatered and transported to a landfill, or further treated for beneficial reuse. Some municipalities are using their biosolids to make fuel (bio-diesel) for energy production.
